Description of Event:
The Folklife Festival will take place between Fourth and Seventh streets, north of the National Air and Space Museum, from June 29 to July 4 and July 7 to 10. Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special events taking place most evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. In 2016, it'll be celebrating the cultures of the Basque Country and diverse musical traditions of California. Join us to experience these resilient communities through music, dance, food, storytelling, sports and craft demonstrations, and more. See a range of Basque music and performance, from traditional folk songs to bertsolaritza (improvised sung poetry competition) and modern dance. Meet master craftspeople, ship builders, cheese makers, and chefs. Learn to speak phrases in the ancient Euskara language. Experience the music of immigrant and Native communities across the state. Hear Armenian melodies, Quechan storytelling, Mexican son jarocho music mixed with Japanese obon dance, Afghan rubâb, Afro-Latin jazz, and more.Information:
