Crafting in Maine—For Love or Money?

March 2009

If you are a crafter in Maine who is crafting for the love of it, have you ever thought about trying to make money doing it? If you are already trying to make money with crafting in Maine, are you making enough to make it worth the effort and the time spent on it? There is an important attitudinal change that is essential if you want to turn your love of making crafts into a viable business. The first thing you must have is a strong desire to make money doing what you love. Once you have that, what is needed is to set a goal for how much money you want to make. Keeping this desire and your goal in mind will help you work through the challenges that may come your way and will shape your business in many ways. Making money in Maine with crafting can be more complicated than you might first imagine. There are many things to consider like where you will sell your crafts, how much you will charge for them, and even more basic things like which crafts to create for sale. In fact the best way to make money from crafts in Maine is to sell them through a variety of mediums. Craft shows are an excellent means to sell your creations and make valuable contacts that you can cultivate throughout the year. Too many crafters go for the immediate sale and completely miss this golden opportunity. Another great idea is creating your own web site to sell your crafts. This allows you to bring unique "Made in Maine" crafts to the rest of the world with very little overhead. Be sure to set your prices at the correct range so that you are making a profit and charging enough to cover shipping charges and so on. Another thing to consider if you want to make a profit selling your crafts in Maine is to find out what all items people buy. You might make something you like and people may even say that it is "cute", but are there enough people willing to spend their hard earned cash to purchase this item from you? You may need to "test market" some crafts before making large quantities. Crafting is a very enjoyable hobby and can be profitable in Maine as long as you have the desire and determination to see it through.

Hello,

I’m just getting started with selling my crafts. I’m actually planning on being in some fairs this month. I have no idea how to go about tax law and such? I don’t have a “business” name.  I’d love any info you have on this!

Thanks!
