The fourth Saturday in October each year is the time for Williams Station Day, a wonderful family event that celebrates the importance of the railroad in the life of the Atmore community when in 1866, Atmore was first called Williams Station - just a supply stop along the Mobile and Great Northern railroad. In 1897 the town was renamed to honor C.P. Atmore, General Passenger Agent for the L and N Ra ilroad in Louisville, Kentucky. Williams Station Day is a one day regionally advertised festival that includes a juried fine art show (featuring some of the region's talented potters, painters, jewelers and mixed media artists). Cash awards are given in the juried fine art show - $500 Best of Show; $300 First Place; $100 Judges Award and three $100 Awards of Merit. The festival also includes a craft show (original work only) and offers incentives for demonstrating traditional artisans. Two - $100 Awards of Merit are given in the Craft Show. Along with the arts and crafts, Williams Station Day features storytellers, live music under the Fiddler's Tent, a real working locomotive that children of all ages can climb aboard, model train show, antique car show, old timey cane milling, a children's art village and more. The majority of the day's activities are centered around the YMCA on Pensacola Avenue. This 1926 Georgian building provides a beautiful backdrop for the Center Stage where folks can enjoy the talents of blues, country and gospel musicians. Food and beverages will be available from a variety of local and commercial vendors. An easy one hour drive from Mobile, Pensacola and Baldwin County, Williams Station Day is packed with great venues to fit every taste. Admission to the festival is free.
