Description of Event:
The first Block Party headlined Minnie Pearl back in the 80’s. After its resounding success, city officials asked the volunteer organizers to continue the event on an annual basis. The makeup of that group of community-minded citizens has changed over the years but the same small committee of volunteers devote countless hours of time to organize the event. The Block Party has always been held in the middle of Punta Gorda to highlight the rejuvenation of downtown. Attendees will notice several major building completed in and around the Block Party since Hurricane Charley. The event lasts all day and has drawn over 40,000 people from all over. The traffic is blocked off to feature multiple stages, all showcasing local musical and performance talent and a special headliner each year. Children are part of the event with a street dedicated to children’s activities only. More than 40 non profit organizations participate and benefit greatly from this annual event.
