In it's 27th year Independence's Mountain Foliage Festival is held the 2nd weekend in October kicking off on Friday afternoon with the Pie Baking Contest and vendors arriving. On Friday evening, the hililarity begins with the annual Potty Princess Contest. A hillbilly spoof on a beauty pageant, held at the Historic 1908 Courthouse, this hillbilly beauty pageant is open to men and women 15 years of age and older. On Saturday, there is music and entertainment, vendors and exhibitors on both the McKnight lot and the Historic 1908 Courthouse lawn. There are demonstrations of heritage skills such as weaving, spinning, blacksmithing and felting. At 11am, the Official Grand Privy Race of the State of Virginia, starts with outhouses racing down Main Street in double elimination heats until a winner is determined. There are all sorts of contests for all ages including Pumpkin Decorating Contest, Pie Eating Contest and Toilet Paper Tossing Contests.
