Bank of Hawaii Presents the Hawaii Book & Music Festival
11th annual ‘best-seller’ event takes place April 30 & May 1, 2016
HONOLULU, HI—Bank of Hawaii presents the 11th Annual Hawaii Book & Music Festival, a celebration of story and song taking place at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds (Honolulu Hale) in downtown Honolulu on Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Free admission and parking.
Book and music lovers won’t want to miss this ever-popular family event featuring multiple stages and pavilions with readings by and discussions with local, national and internationally known authors; performances by musicians, storytellers, actors and dancers; and ongoing entertainment for the kids, including the return of Mr. Steve, national host of PBS Kids. There also are book-sellers and publisher booths, the Bank of Hawaii Book Swap, and an open-air food court.
Among the major authors scheduled to present at the festival are Susanna Moore, Paradise of the Pacific; Julie Checkoway, The Three-Year Swim Club: The Untold Story of Maui’s Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory; Cecily Wong’s romantic novel Diamond Head; Zoe Fitzgerald Carter, Imperfect Endings: A Daughter’s Story of Love, Loss, and Letting Go; Shawna Yang Ryan’s historical novel Green Island; Victoria Kneubuhl’s new crime story, Murder Frames the Scene; historian Pamela Rotner Sakamoto’s Midnight in Broad Daylight: A Japanese American Family Caught Between Two Worlds; David Davis, Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku; poet Christy Passion, Still Out Of Place.
On the Main Stage will be ongoing performances by major musicians and hula halau and two new Main Stage events: the finals of a state-wide Singer-Songwriter Competition, and a new annual two-hour event, ‘Ukulele Kanikapila, led by top musicians and welcoming everyone to participate. For youngsters, the Keiki Stage and Keiki Pavilion will present song, dance and dramatic performances as well as storytelling and read-aloud sessions.
In association with the Folger Society’s commemoration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, the Festival is featuring a performance of The Gravedigger’s Tale – Hamlet’s story from that point of view.
Over 30 panels will explore such topics as the evolving native Hawaiian culture; health and living well in Hawaii; the adaptations of Buddhism in modern Hawaii; astronomy in Hawaii; Ms. Aligned: Women Writing Men; and a panel of Filipina writers.
