Description of Event:
The Butte-Lawrence County Fair is held at the Fairgrounds in Nisland, SD during the third week of August. The first Butte County Fair at Nisland was held September 27, 28 and 29, 1921. The fair was not held in 1931 because of a severe hail storm, 1936 because of the Depression, in 1937 due to insufficient funds, and 1943 - 1946 because of wartime difficulties and a polio outbreak. The 50th fair was held in 1977 although the Golden Jubilee was not celebrated until 1978. Lawrence County had been holding their fair at the Spearfish Park, but the lack of adequate fairground facilities prompted Lawrence County to join forces i n1979 and the first annual Butte/Lawrence County Fair was held in 1980.
